Eel the Camille

Eel the camille
is no ordinary eel.
She insists she’s not an eel
but rather a
Camille.
She won’t yield to reason
or give an inch to logic:
to her a pretzel is a quetzal
and a knick-knack is a knock-it.
“Two, and two?
Two and two is five.
Five and one is sixty-eight,
and on Tuesdays sixty-nine.”
If you think
I’m crazy
or looney tooney mad,
ask her who her mother is:
she’ll indicate her Dad.
“Up
is Down,
and Down
is Up,”
(Camille is singing from a china cup);
she’s at rainbow’s end
in a pot of tea
stirring all the letters
from A to Z.
“My name is Eel
and I am a Camille.
You don’t have to like it,
but That’s The Deal.”

Anguila la Camille
no es una anguila común.
Insiste en que no es anguila,
sino más bien
Camille.
No cede ante la razón
ni concede nada a la lógica:
para ella, un pretzel es un quetzal
y un cachivache es un “knock-it”.
“¿Dos y dos?
Dos y dos son cinco.
Cinco y uno son sesenta y ocho,
y los martes, sesenta y nueve.”
Si piensas
que estoy loco
o rematadamente chiflado,
pregúntale quién es su madre:
te señalará a su papá.
“Arriba
es abajo,
y abajo
es arriba,”
(Camille canta desde una taza de porcelana);
está al final del arcoíris
en una taza de té,
revolviendo todas las letras
de la A a la Z.
“Me llamo Anguila
y soy una Camille.
No tiene por qué gustarte,
pero así es el trato.”

une Camille.
Elle ne cède pas à la raison
ni ne concède un pouce à la logique :
pour elle, un bretzel est un quetzal
et un bibelot est un “knock-it”.
« Deux et deux ?
Deux et deux font cinq.
Cinq et un font soixante-huit,
et le mardi, soixante-neuf. »
Si vous pensez
que je suis fou
ou complètement timbré,
demandez-lui qui est sa mère :
elle vous indiquera son père.
« En haut
c’est en bas,
et en bas
c’est en haut, »
(Camille chante dans une tasse en porcelaine) ;
elle est au bout de l’arc-en-ciel
dans une théière,
remuant toutes les lettres
de A à Z.
« Je m’appelle Anguille
et je suis une Camille.
Vous n’êtes pas obligés d’aimer ça,
mais c’est comme ça. »
